CHISP® Certification FAQs
Am I qualified to take the test?
The CHISP certification exam is a rigorous test requiring extensive health care and IT knowledge. To qualify to sit for the exam, you must successfully complete the ASHIM Health IT Professional online training program or have a health IT background, including training and experience.
What does the test cover?
The CHISP certification exam covers health IT, health care regulations, computer science, medical insurance billing, information and data security, medical terminology and anatomy, operational principles in health care, data-mining, reports, and queries, and technology in quality of care. How do I prepare for the test?
ASHIM’s Health Information Technology Professional courses give you the flexibility to learn at your own pace and from the comfort of your home or office. Each easy-to-use course is divided into learning modules with tests at the end of each module to assess your progress. In addition to reading assignments, many courses feature audio lectures, critical-thinking exercises and other learning materials as well as personal coaches to offer guidance.
Students may also prepare for the exam with ASHIM’s study guide. This study guide consists of 150 pages of today’s most relevant Health IT content including: CHISP Delivery and Structure, Computer Science, Data Security, Data Queries, Basic Human Anatomy and Related Terms, Health Care Operations, Key Health IT Regulations, Medical Insurance Billing, Health IT and Quality of Care, and Health Care Technology.
How does CHISP® vary from other certifications?

How much does the test cost?
Qualified health care, IT, or health IT professionals can sit for the CHISP exam for $175 plus ASHIM membership.
Where and when is the test given?
CHISP is a high-stakes proctored exam delivered online between 12 Noon to 12 Midnight EST M-F, and from 6 p.m. to 11 EST p.m. on weekends. It is fully secured using today’s technologies, including biometric keystroke analytics and does not require test takers to go to a testing facility. Instead, the exam may be taken from any computer with a standalone web cam and high-speed internet access. It must be scheduled, rescheduled, or canceled 48 hours in advance.
